City centre living, truly independent

To live at Rufus Court is to be at the heart of Chester without being swallowed by it. You're ten seconds from Northgate Street, yet in a place that feels entirely your own, a quiet, characterful courtyard that the city hasn't quite managed to find.

Each of the five apartments occupies a different part of the Grade II listed building and surrounding courtyard. No two are the same: some are compact and cleverly planned; others more spacious, with exposed brickwork and character that's been accumulating for two centuries. All share the same address, and the same independent spirit below.

When a tenancy ends here, it rarely stays empty long. If you're interested in being considered when one next becomes available, add your name below and we'll be in touch.

🏛

Grade II Listed building and courtyard

The main building dates to the early nineteenth century. Original features, including exposed brickwork and period ironwork, sit alongside sympathetically modernised interiors across the building and surrounding courtyard.

📍

Central but tucked away

Steps from the cross yet off the tourist trail. Northgate Street, the market, and Chester's independent food scene are all within two minutes on foot.

🎵

Part of the community

You're above Alexander's Live, one of Chester's great music venues. Living here means being part of a place with genuine character.

🎟

Free access to Alexander's outdoor events

Every resident of Rufus Court gets complimentary access to Alexander's Live outdoor events. Being part of the building means being part of what happens in it.

🔑

Long-term lets only

These are homes, not short-stay rentals. All apartments are let on periodic assured tenancies. Rufus Court residents tend to stay.

Five apartments, each its own

No two are identical. Each apartment reflects a different part of the building's long life, and a different way of living in the heart of Chester.

Two hundred years on Northgate Street

The building that houses Rufus Court has stood at the junction of Northgate Street and St Werburgh Street since the early nineteenth century. Grade II listed, it sits inside Chester's Roman and medieval city wall boundary — a few metres from where legionaries once stood watch.

When Rod Cox and Pauline Thompson of the Thompson Cox Partnership acquired the site in the 1980s, the building was derelict. The conversion into a mixed-use courtyard — commercial units below, residential above — was designed to preserve as much original fabric as possible. Exposed brickwork and period ironwork remain throughout.

Today the building is managed with the same care it was built with. It's not a development — it's a place people call home.
